
From 18 to 28 October, a 10-member delegation from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) completed a “Training and Study Tour on Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization in China – Improving Resilience of the DPRK against Food Insecurity”, gaining first-hand exposure to sustainable agricultural mechanization. The event was organized by the Centre for Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP-CSAM) with the support of Jiangsu University, as well as the Resident Coordinators of the United Nations in China and DPRK.
The delegation travelled across Beijing, Zhenjiang, Suzhou and Wuhan to attend expert-led training sessions on institutional frameworks, mechanization policies, full-process mechanization and context-specific solutions for challenging terrains; Visited leading agricultural mechanization agencies, research institutions and universities, as well as the China International Agricultural Machinery Exhibition (CIAME), to see the agricultural machinery and equipment in practice.
The event successfully achieved its designated objectives as the delegation reported that the learnings would provide significant value for DPRK’s upcoming five-year planning in agriculture including agricultural mechanization. By investing in shared knowledge and partnerships, the event contributed toward a more food-secure and sustainable future in DPRK. The DPRK delegation expressed their appreciation and satisfaction with the arrangements for the training and study tour, and showed their interests of further engagement in other initiatives and activities of ESCAP-CSAM.
